Functional refinement
- The goal of the user story is clear
- The value for the end user is clear
- The user story has acceptance criteria, it is clear when it is done
- It is clear how the user story will be tested and verified during the development
- Dependencies with other work items, teams and/or external parties are clear
- For user stories in a User Interface, designs are available
- If needed, a functional (flow) diagram is available
- If technical investigation is needed, one or more team member are assigned to do this ("dev check")
Technical refinement
- It is clear how the implementation will be done
- The work needed to complete the user story is represented by small tasks
- A technical diagram is available, it is clear in which part(s) of the existing solution any modifications or additions have to be done
- The team estimates the user story (using reference stories)
- If possible, the user story is sliced into smaller user stories
